Fearing deportation, hundreds of Indian students in Canada have protested recent changes to the nation’s immigration laws by taking to the streets. Furthermore, a significant number of over 70,000 international students in Canada have organised in opposition to the changes in federal policy.
These students now face a higher chance of deportation as a result of the recent measures outlined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration, including limitations on study visas.
Trudeau government tighten immigration policies
The Canadian government reversed its 2022 expansion by announcing on Monday that it will drastically cut the amount of temporary foreign workers it allows. This choice was made as worries regarding the number of temporary residents are becoming more and more pressing for Justin Trudeau’s administration.
Streams of permanent residency are also being considered for reduction by Trudeau’s cabinet. “We are examining the different avenues to guarantee that, going forward, Canada continues to be a nation that is supportive of immigration while also being responsible in our integration efforts and ensuring that there are paths to success for all newcomers,” the prime minister of Canada stated.

These students have suffered greatly as a result of the policy changes. According to CityNews Toronto, a large number of people who planned to apply for permanent residency after finishing their education are now saddled with heavy debt and dashed hopes.
With many students facing deportation due to new provincial laws that demand a 25% drop in permanent residency nominations, the situation has gotten out of hand.
Former international student Mehakdeep Singh, who is in danger of being deported, expressed his disappointment, saying, “I spent the most important six years of my life taking numerous risks to come to Canada. I completed my coursework, worked, paid taxes, and accumulated enough points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), but the government has just used us.
The new regulations will decrease the period of low-wage temporary foreign worker licenses from two years to one, eliminate low-wage temporary foreign workers in areas with an unemployment rate of 6% or higher, and limit the percentage of low-wage temporary foreign workers firms can hire to 10%.
