Promise of a ministerial berth and conversing ability in Marathi sealed the deal for BJP!

In respite for the Bharatiya Janata Party, a prominent rebel leader Gopal Shetty, a former BJP MP, withdrew his nomination as an independent candidate from Mumbai’s Borivli. His candidature would have split the saffron votes between the party’s official candidate Sanjay Upadhyay and Shetty, making a win tough for the BJP. But what was behind this checkmate? It is said that an old working association with a now-powerful BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde, who hails from Maharashtra, conversing ability in Marathi and above all, promise of a ministerial berth (if the Mahayuti alliance comes to power again), sealed the deal. Shetty had met BJP’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP’s national Joint General Secretary Shiv Prakash, in the presence of Vinod Tawde, who has served as minister in the Maharashtra government and later as the Leader of Opposition and is now the BJP’s General Secretary in Delhi. Shetty won the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat by margin of more than four lakh in 2014 and 2019, but was denied a ticket in the 2024 general elections. BJP leader Piyush Goyal was handed over the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, which he won. Shetty had represented the Borivali seat.
