Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A 65-year-old female doctor, digitally arrested for almost 48 hours in her room in Govindpura on Friday, was duped of Rs 10.5 lakh. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Deepak Nayak, who rescued her from the clutches of the cyber frauds, told Free Press that the woman had identified herself as Dr Ragini Mishra. The fraudsters called her up on Wednesday morning and told her they were from CBI, Delhi.
They further said they had a tipoff that she had been involved in a money-laundering case of Rs 427 crore and would be interrogated. They warned against disconnecting the video call and informing anybody about the case. Else, some sleuths, near her house in civil uniform, would shoot her. Nayak further said fraudsters had digitally arrested her in her own room and told her to pay Rs 10.5 lakh to get relieved of the case.
The fraudsters also told her that they would verify her case, and if she was found innocent, they would return the money after 24 hours. Because she was not coming out of her room, her husband Dr Mahesh Chandra Mishra, had some doubts. When he wanted to know from her the reasons for not coming out of the room, she said she was busy. ACP further said that on Thursday morning, fraudsters told Dr Ragini Mishra that they were allowing her to disconnect the video call for an hour to let her go to the bank and deposit the money. She then went to the bank and transferred the money to the fraudster’s account via NEFT transaction. She returned home and got connected with the fraudsters again, after checking the 360-degree view of her room.
On Friday morning, when she did not receive her money back according to the fraudster’s promise, she smelt a rat. She then called her husband to the room and asked him to call the police. When Nayak came to her room, the fraudsters even warned him. Fraudsters then disconnected the call and switched off their mobile numbers. Police registered an FIR against the fraudsters and begun to their IP address.
