The BJP on Saturday came down heavily on Congress leader Bhai Jagtap for his comments against the Election Commission (EC), comparing it to Prime Minister Modi’s dog. He had said that the poll body is ‘like a dog sitting outside Prime Minister Modi’s bungalow.’ He accused the Commission of misusing its power and enabling scandals across India.
Reacting to this, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that the Congress questions the EC only when it suits them, but has no issues when elections are held in other places. Poonawalla accused the Congress of insulting the constitutional institution.
The BJP has filed a complaint against Jagtap for his remarks, demanding that action be taken for insulting a constitutional body. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya said he had written to the EC and the Mumbai Police Commissioner, calling for action against Jagtap.
Notably, Jagtap refused to apologise over his objectionable remark, stating that what he said was correct and that the EC should function like former EC TN Seshan. He stood by his statement and said that democracy was being discredited because of the EC’s actions.
