Mumbai: Acting swiftly on a complaint of a woman duped of over Rs 2.5 crore in online trading scam, the Mumbai cyber police successfully froze Rs 1.22 crore funds received in multiple accounts across various banks. Owing to the coordinated action, the cops recovered a significant portion of the siphoned money within 12 hours.
The feat could also be achieved owing to the complainant’s quick action, who immediately dialled cyber police helpline 1930 without wasting the golden hour (reporting the fraud at the earliest).
According to the police, the Chembur resident fell prey to the scam after coming into contact with the fraudsters online. They convinced her to invest money in pre-IPO and grey market trading schemes, promising high returns. The scammers then added her to a WhatsApp group to gain her trust and persuaded her to transfer Rs 2.61 crore via RTGS to various accounts.
The moment the woman realised that she had been duped, she immediately rang 1930 for assistance. Assistant Police Inspectors (API), Mangesh Bhor and Nivrutti Bawiskar, promptly filed a complaint on the national cyber crime reporting portal, coordinated with the nodal officials of the banks concerned and got the whopping amount frozen.
