The women of Dharavi are shattering stereotypes of being caregivers and embarking on their entrepreneurial journeys. Trained with skillbased free workshops by Dharavi Social Mission (DSM), an initiative of Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, several women in Dharavi have successfully started their own small business-like beauty salon and supporting their families financially.
It is a matter not only of personal development and financial independence but bringing a social change in Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia. “It seemed easier to surrender to fate and let life take its own course. What new can you imagine living in Dharavi? But it was DSM which encouraged and trained me,” said Shital Dhumale (28), who runs a home salon in Dharavi and aspires to work in a professional salon.
Asma Khan, another graduate of the beauty therapist course of DSM, said, “The course has given me the confidence to turn my passion for beauty into a career.” For 28- year-old Komal Pawar, the beauty therapy workshop became a turning point in life. “I had basic understanding of beauty services, but the workshop helped me sharpen my skills and build confidence. I am balancing motherhood with my growing business. I am not just contributing financially to my family but also building my dream. I want to open my own beauty salon outside once the kids get older,” Pawar said. In a statement DSM said, “
DSM may act as a catalyst, but, finally, it is the desire and determination of Dharavikars for change that is making the initiatives successful. We hope for this silent revolution to spread and touch many more lives within Dharavi for a holistic and inclusive growth.” “Stories of Shital, Asma and Komal suggest that women from diverse backgrounds in Dharavi are stepping into new roles as employees, entrepreneurs and freelance beauticians,” the statement added.
Dharavi Social Mission is a flagship initiative of Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd, dedicated to fostering wholesome development of Dharavi residents.
