Highest Temperature In 16 Years

On Wednesday, the city experienced an unusually hot December, with temperatures soaring to the highest levels in 16 years. The Colaba Weather Bureau reported 35°C while Santa Cruz hit 37.3°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this heat to Cyclone Fengal, which is obstructing cooler southern winds, with extreme conditions expected to persist for the next four days. Notably, Wednesday marked Mumbai’s warmest December since 2008. This heat wave follows a record low of 16.5°C just a week prior.

Impact of Cyclone Fengal

Cyclone Fengal is primarily responsible for the unusual heat, as warm winds from the south have blocked the city’s temperatures from falling. On Tuesday, overcast skies prevailed in Mumbai, although rain is still improbable. The cyclone, currently heading toward the Arabian Sea, will keep influencing the city’s weather throughout the week.

Senior scientists from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have attributed the strange weather pattern to the surge of strong easterlies and moisture, suggesting that Mumbai is expected to face warmer days for the next 3-4 days, after which a drop in temperatures is anticipated.

On Wednesday morning, various areas like Juhu, Bandra, Goregaon, and the island city experienced unexpected drizzle. As the day went on, residents struggled with elevated humidity and temperatures, with the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recording 37.3 degrees Celsius, almost 4 degrees higher than normal.
