Mumbai: On that fateful day in Kurla, some unlucky found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, paying the ultimate price and some narrowly escaped the accident.
A 20-year-old woman, Anam Sheikh, and an 18-year-old student, Shivam Kashyap, lost their lives in the accident. However, Anam’s father Muzaffar Sheikh, other individuals Basheera Shaikh, and Mohammad Sajid miraculously survived the mishap.
20-year-old Anam Sheikh arrived at Kurla railway station from work on Monday night and was picked up by her father, Muzaffar Sheikh, a makeup artist in the Hindi film industry. The father and daughter reached home and then went out to get a pressure cooker repaired.
“They returned home a second time but then realised they needed to get a glass plate for the microwave, so they both went out again. That’s when the accident happened,” said Anam’s cousin, Naveed Khan.
“I met them in our building when they were on their way to pick up Anam from Kurla railway station. Suddenly, around 10.00pm, I got a call from a family friend informing me that the accident had taken place. My uncle’s bike was also found at the spot,” said Muzaffar’s nephew, Zakir Beg.
Another victim was 18-year-old Shivam Kashyap, a first-year student at Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Matunga, who often helped his father, Budhraj Kashyap, manage his clothes shop on LBS Road in Kurla. After reaching home from college on Monday evening, Shivam left for the shop.
“He had come to the main road to have breakfast when the incident happened,” said his mother, Sudha Kashyap. Shivam succumbed to the injuries during treatment. He is survived by his parents and two younger brothers.
Basheera Shaikh, who survived the tragic accident, told the media that he was in a shared auto rickshaw along with three others, including the driver. Suddenly, the bus hit their auto from behind. Since he was sitting at the edge, was thrown out, but the autorickshaw was completely destroyed.
Mohammad Sajid, an eyewitness of the accident, was attending a wedding in the area with his friends and family. He said, “Four of us were just walking on the roadside when the bus hit us from behind. We were thrown in different directions and only met at the hospital.” Among those with Sajid, one person’s condition is critical, while another has minor injuries, and one escaped unhurt.
