Pratham, an NGO, has concluded its week-long education drive aimed at raising awareness about disabilities, promoting health and wellness, and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities on December 10, Human Rights Day. The initiative, which has been running across six disability centers, focused on empowering communities and families while providing essential services to children with disabilities.
The centers, established in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Education Department and Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, are located in Kurla, Ghatkopar, Shivaji Nagar, Dharavi, Borivali, and Kandivali. These centers have been instrumental in offering comprehensive support to children with disabilities, engaging their families, and raising awareness within local communities.
Conducted various activities
As part of the education drive, a variety of activities have been conducted, including health camps that focused on screening for occupational therapy and physiotherapy needs, ensuring early detection and timely intervention for children. Mental health workshops for caregivers also provided valuable resources to manage stress and enhance emotional well-being while supporting children with disabilities.
Pratham organises drive for for disability awareness
In addition, specialized training sessions were organized for Anganwadi teachers to help them better identify and support children with disabilities in their classrooms and communities. Pratham’s poster campaign, displayed at key locations such as railway stations, BEST buses, and community spaces across Mumbai, spread messages of inclusion, accessibility, and the rights of persons with disabilities. Street plays and public performances further amplified the campaign’s message, challenging stereotypes and fostering a greater understanding of disability issues.
Program to conclude on Human Rights Day
The campaign will culminate with a special program on Human Rights Day, bringing together therapists, special educators, and community members to reflect on the progress made and discuss the next steps toward building a more inclusive society. Through this initiative, Pratham aims to reach thousands of individuals across Mumbai, empowering families and communities to embrace inclusion and advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities.
