MP December 11 Weather Updates: Cold Wave Alert For 16 Districts In State Including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur; Pachmarhi Freezes @ 1.8 Degrees Celsius

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Cold wave swept most districts of the state, with day and night temperatures dropping to as low as 6 degrees Celsius. A cold wave alert has been issued for Wednesday in 16 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Ujjain. Cold day conditions are likely in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Shajapur.

According to senior IMD Bhopal’s meteorologist Divya E. Surendran, “At present, a Western Disturbance is active over western and northern India. Additionally, jet stream winds are blowing at a speed of 240 km/h at an altitude of 12.6 km. These two systems are responsible for the severe cold in Madhya Pradesh.”

Wednesday to be coldest so far

The weathermen say, Wednesday will see cold day conditions in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Shajapur. Additionally, cold winds are expected in Jabalpur, Dhar, Agar-Malwa, Rajgarh, Sehore, Vidisha, Sagar, Narmadapuram, Raisen, Damoh, Narsinghpur, and Seoni.

Chilly night in Bhopal 

On Tuesday, Bhopal recorded day temperature of 23.4 degrees, while night temperature dropped further by 1.4 degrees to 7.8 degrees. 

Icy winds envelop Indore

The north of the city witnessed its first ‘Severe Cold Day’ of the season, with the temperature dropping 7 degrees Celsius below the normal. Moreover, the night temperature also dropped to 8.7 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest night of December in the last three years.

Regional meteorological department officials said the city would witness similar conditions for the next few days.

Ujjain shivers on coldest night 

Ujjain shivers as the minimum temperature was recorded as 7.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night,  which was the lowest one in the current season.

Weather system affecting Madhya Pradesh at present

Pachmarhi at 1.8 degrees Celsius

During the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, Pachmarhi recorded a temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius. The previous night, it was 3.5 degrees Celsius, marking a significant drop of 1.7 degrees Celsius in just one night.

Temperatures also fell in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, and Jabalpur. The recorded temperatures were 6.9 degrees in Bhopal, 8.6 degrees in Indore, 6 degrees in Gwalior, 7.5 degrees in Ujjain, and 6.5 degrees in Jabalpur.

Apart from Pachmarhi, temperatures dropped below 6 degrees Celsius in Raisen, Guna, Umaria, Mandla, and Nowgong. Raisen recorded 4.8 degrees, Guna and Umaria 5 degrees, Mandla 5.2 degrees, and Nowgong 5.3 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday, cold winds swept through 15 districts of the state, and Pachmarhi was the 10th coldest city in the country with 1.8 degrees Celsius. Bhopal recorded day temperature 23.4 degrees Celsius while it recorded a drop of 1.4 degrees Celsius in night temperature at 7.8. 

Indore: Lowest temperature of century recorded in 1935 

The highest maximum temperature was 33°C on 31 December 2015. 

The lowest minimum temperature was 1.1°C on 27 December 1936. 

The highest monthly rainfall of 108.5 mm in the year 1967 

The heaviest fall in 24 hours was 53 mm on 17 December 2009.  

What is a Severe Cold Day?

According to weather experts, a Cold Day should be considered when the minimum temperature is 10°C or less for the plains and 0°C or less for the hilly regions.

Cold Day: Maximum temperature departure is -4.5°C to -6.4°C

Severe Cold Day: Maximum temperature departure is < -6.4°C
