In the 2025 QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, the University of Sheffield is placed 10th in the United Kingdom and 16th in Europe, with a global ranking of 27th out of 1,751 institutions.
Universities’ influence on the most important Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concerns in the world is evaluated by the QS Sustainability Rankings. This covers topics including health and wellbeing, equity, employment outcomes, net-zero aims and emissions reductions, and environmental research and impact. The ranking assesses the influence of universities as research and teaching hubs as well as sizable establishments with sustainability issues.

This acknowledgement reflects the University of Sheffield’s dedication to integrating social and environmental sustainability across every aspect of our institution, even as we navigate financial challenges.

We are equipping our students with the skills and knowledge needed to address the sustainability challenges of the future while driving research that delivers impactful solutions to tackle climate change and fostering equitable, clean growth,” she further added.
The University received a 94.5 out of 100 rating. It was ranked 15th in the world for health and wellbeing, which evaluated things like research on health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the facilities colleges provide for students’ health and wellbeing on campus, such as access to physical and mental health support and healthy food options.
It was ranked 29th in the globe and received a high score for social impact as well. This component of the rankings examined a number of factors, including knowledge education, which focused on the University’s research partnerships, equality, which evaluated the impact and effort of an institution’s equity commitment. The University’s standing in several Social Impact subcategories, such as Impact, Knowledge Exchange, and Environmental Education, improved over the previous year.
Additionally, Knowledge Exchange (ranked 27th), Governance (ranked 31st), and Equality (ranked 38th) all obtained global top-40 rankings.
According to the THE Impact Rankings, which evaluate how institutions are influencing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the University of Sheffield was placed 15th in the UK and 58th in the world earlier in 2024.
