Mumbai: Central Railway Observes Energy Conservation Week With Awareness Campaign, Sustainable Measures To Reduce Carbon Footprint

Mumbai: Central Railway is observing Energy Conservation Week from 8th December 2024 to 14th December 2024 in Headquarters and all Divisions and Workshops.

At a function at CSMT on 12th December Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager, Central Railway, released a pamphlet highlighting the Energy Conservation work being done over Central Railway and the Energy Conservation measures to be followed in day to day life. As part of the Energy Conservation Week, the General Manager also released a table place card insisting switching off lights, fans and air-conditioners when not in use.

Shiv Ram, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Principal Chief Operation Manager Shyam Sunder Gupta, Principal Head of other Departments and other Senior Officers of Central Railway were present on the occasion.

Divisional Railway Managers / Additional Divisional Managers of all Divisions, Chief Workshop Managers of Workshops attended the function through video conferencing.

Various awareness posters, banners were displayed, drawings competitions were conducted and Other programmes were organized all over Central Railway.

Following Energy Conservation & sustainability measures have been taken up by Central Railway:

• 100% lighting of stations and Railway buildings are being done with energy efficient LED based lights

• More than 33000 BLDC energy efficient fans have been provided on Central Railway. A BLDC fan, or brushless direct current fan use less electricity than traditional fans, consuming around 26-30 watts as against 70-75 watts by traditional fans.

• BEE-5 star related equipments are being provided on Central Railway as another step towards energy conversation. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) star rating is a scale from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the most efficient.

• 2800 energy efficient inverter based air-conditioners have been provided over Central Railway.

• Investment grade energy audit of more than 80 buildings has been carried out to make plan for provision of energy efficient fittings.

• 10 buildings of Central Railway have been given ‘Shunya / Shunya Plus” label by Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has introduced a labeling programme called Shunya for Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and Shunya Plus for Net Positive Energy Buildings (NPEB).

• More than 16 Mega Watts rooftop solar panels have been provided at 249 locations over Central Railway to harness the power of solar energy.

• For traction purposes, long term tie up has been done with NTPC, IRCON and other entities, for procuring green power for using Railway traction. Around 14% power procurement is through green sources as of now.

Further Central Railway has plans to enhance green power up to 70% by 2027-28 by having long term tie ups.

With increasing number of Railway projects and redevelopment of stations being undertaken, increase in the number of trains, passenger count and various amenities provided, energy efficiency and conservation assumes importance towards achieving the goal of Indian Railways Mission “ Carbon Neutral” by the year-2030.

Central Railway remains committed to its mission of conservation of energy and contributing significantly towards Indian Railway’s goal of a Green Earth.
