Mumbai: BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has directed the civic staff to ensure that all the roads in Mumbai which are under concretisation , should be completed by May 31. The objective is to ensure the roads in Mumbai are motorable before the monsoon kicks in.
Gagrani on Tuesday took review of the road concretisation work undertaken by the BMC, where roads across the island city are to be concentrised. BMC has till not completed concretisation of 1,333 km roads in Mumbai and rest of the roads are undertaken in two phases, for which work orders have been given.
In phase I, 324 km of roads (which consists of 698 roads) will be concentised and in phase II, 377 km of roads (which consists of total 1420 roads) will be concentised. Of the total work, the BMC has targeted to complete 75 percent of phase 1 and 50 percent of phase 2 by May 31.
Accordingly, the BMC Chief Gagrani directed the officials during the review meeting on Tuesday to ensure that works on the targeted roads are completed by the given deadline of May 31.
During the recent budget speech, Gagrani had also mentioned that the BMC will not start work on any more roads in Mumbai untill the existing works are completed as there are several complaints raised by citizens on excessive road works in Mumbai.
However, if any important works are required to be carried, it can be undertaken, however the staff and contractors have to ensure that all roads are motorable by May 31, Gagrani had said.
During the meeting on Tuesday, Gagrani highlighted that all other departments apart from Roads, like Storm water drains, Hydraulic Engineer and others whose works are ongoing, have to also ensure that works are completed within the given deadline.
Additionally, the private agencies like power and gas companies who have digged the city roads for laying lines, have to ensure all works are completed as once the roads are concentised, no permissions for digging the roads will be given by the BMC.
