Indore: Dispute Over Elderly Eoman’s Death Before Cataract Surgery, Probe Ordered

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A 62-year-old died while undergoing the procedure of cataract operation at Hukumchand Polyclinic on Thursday noon. However, the doctors claimed that she died during the preparations for surgery before the procedure could even start. The deceased has been identified as Lalita Raju, a resident of North Toda.

It was planned that she would get operated by Dr Kamla Arya but she succumbed when an injection of anaesthesia was administered into her eye. Later, the doctors sent her to MY Hospital where she was declared brought dead following the ruckus by family members alleging negligence by the doctor.

On Friday, chief medical and health officer Dr BS Saitya removed Dr Arya from Hukumchand Polyclinic and shifted her to District Hospital while ordering a probe in the matter. “We have constituted a six-member committee led by civil surgeon Dr GL Sodhi to investigate the matter and to submit the report in seven days,” Dr Saitya said.

Meanwhile, the ophthalmologist, Dr Kamla Arya shrugged of the negligence claims, and  said that the woman was suffering from hypertension and diabetes. “We had refused to get her operated as she was having uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. On Friday, her reports were under range after which a medicine doctor had given her fitness certificate and accordingly we planned her surgery,” Dr Arya told the media. She added that the patient had gone under shock and died during the preparations for surgery.

CMHO orders to shift high risk cases to big centres

Amid the ruckus by the family members, CMHO Dr Saitya said that they have sent the doctor to District Hospital and launched a probe as well. “We have already directed the doctors at Hukumchand Polyclinic to send high-risk cases to big private centres. The woman had been suffering from various diseases. We will take action after getting the report from the probe panel,’ Dr Saitya added.
