Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh has introduced a new category of bars called ‘low alcoholic beverage bars’ under its revised Excise Policy, effective from April 1, 2025.
As the name suggests, these bars will serve only drinks with low alcohol percentage. Drinks with a maximum alcohol content of 10%, such as beer, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages will be available here, a PTI report said. Strong spirits like Whiskey will not be allowed.
An official stated that only drinks with an alcohol content of up to 10% v/v (volume on volume) will be permitted in these outlets, ensuring that stronger alcoholic beverages are not served.
Liquor Sale Ban In 19 Places
Along with the introduction of these new bars, the state government has also decided to ban liquor sales in 19 places, including 17 religious cities. The affected cities include:
Ujjain
Omkareshwar
Maheshwar
Mandleshwar
Orchha
Maihar
Chitrakoot
Datia
Amarkantak
Salkanpur
As part of this move, the government will shut down 47 composite liquor shops, which include outlets selling both Indian-made foreign liquor and country liquor.
Currently, Madhya Pradesh has around 460-470 liquor-cum-beer bars. With the addition of new low-alcohol bars, this number is expected to grow. However, the liquor ban in religious cities will result in a revenue loss of approximately ₹450 crore for the state government. To make up for this, the renewal fees for liquor shops will be increased by 20% in the next fiscal year.
No Ban On Personal Consumption
An official clarified that while the policy restricts the sale and public consumption of liquor in bars, it does not impose any personal restrictions. People can still buy, possess, and drink liquor privately.
This new policy, announced by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, aims to regulate alcohol consumption while respecting religious and cultural sentiments in the affected areas.
