Chandigarh: Two more deportees including a fugitive accused of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act from Haryana – who were among 112 illegal immigrants deported by the US – were arrested on landing in Amritsar Sunday night.
Stating that the accused, Sahil Verma, is a resident of Pehowa town of Kurukshetra, Haryana police, which arrested him from the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar, immediately after his landing, said the accused was booked in May 2022 under POCSO Act and IPC sections for molesting and threatening a minor girl.
According to police, Sahil fled to Vietnam and later to Italy within a few days after learning that the complainant had lodged a first information report (FIR) against him. The accused reportedly stayed in Italy for about two years before illegally entering the US through Mexico on January 25, 2025, where he was arrested there.
Police said that the complainant had said in her complaint that Sahil had blocked her way, molested her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it. According to information, Sahil had paid Rs 38 lakh to an agent to facilitate him to flee abroad.
LUDHIANA DEPORTEE HAS 2 CASES AGAINST HIM
Another deportee Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, who was arrested by the Punjab police upon his landing, has a case of snatching and theft registered against him.
The police said that the accused had a criminal record and he was arrested so that his cases’ status could be verified afresh.
However, stating that he had been falsely framed in those cases, Singh’s father Dari Singh, who is a police constable in Punjab police and an ex-serviceman, said that his son had travelled to US after paying Rs 45 lakh to an agent to fulfil his dream of settling abroad.
2 COUSINS ARRESTED ON SATURDAY
Earlier, the Punjab police had arrested two cousins – hailing from Rajpura town in Patiala district – after the second flight of illegal immigrants landed in Amritsar on Saturday.
Punjab police said that the accused duo Sandeep Singh and Pradeep Singh were wanted in a murder case registered in 2023 and had been declared proclaimed offenders (POs).
While there were 116 illegal immigrants deported by the US in the second flight on February 15, the US government had deported 104 illegal immigrants in its first flight on February 5, last.
