Haryana: Jolt To Congress As Several Leaders Join BJP Ahead Of Municipal Polls

Chandigarh: Giving a major jolt to the Congress several of its leaders have joined the ruling BJP ahead of the upcoming March 2 municipal elections in Haryana.

While the elections would be held in 10 municipal corporations, four of the total 22 municipal councils and 21 municipal committees on March 2, the counting of votes would be held on March 12. The municipal corporations going to polls on March 2, are Gurugram, Manesar, Karnal, Rohtak, Faridabad, Panipat, Hisar and Yamunanagar, while the Panipat municipal corporation election would be held on March 9.

On Wednesday, in a major boost to the ruling saffron party, several senior Congress leaders from Hisar including Ram Niwas Rada, joined BJP, here..

Besides Rada, former municipal chairman Bihari Lal Rada, Youth Congress district president Rohit and several others also joined BJP in presence of chief minister Nayab Saini here. Ram Niwas Rada was the Congress candidate for Hisar assembly seat in the recent state polls, though he lost. Since he was not made its mayoral candidate by Congress, he has joined BJP.

In Karnal too, Congress suffered a major blow with more than 50 of its senior leaders joining BJP in presence of chief minister Saini and state party president Mohan Lal Badoli.

They included former Haryana Minority Commission chairperson Trilochan Singh, former Congress district president (urban) Ashok Khurana, former chairperson Karnal Municipal Corporation Balwinder Kalra, district OBC cell president Sanjay Chandel, a local leader Nittu Mann and several former councillors. An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sunil Bindal also joined BJP.

Party sources said that the Karnal district Congress was facing an internal strife after the party fielded former deputy mayor Manoj Wadhwa as its candidate for Mayor’s post.
