Mumbai: BMC To Install 110 LED Lights At Marine Drive To Enhance Safety And Visitor Experience

In a bid to improve the illumination at Marine Drive, the BMC will be installing 110 LED light fixtures along the stretch from the Air India building to the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). The project aims to accommodate the heavy daily footfall along the iconic promenade, enhancing both safety and the overall experience for visitors.

Marine Drive is a famous, scenic promenade located along the coastline of South Mumbai. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering stunning views of the Arabian Sea. It is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, known for its morning walks, evening drives, and refreshing sea breeze. Constructed in 1915, the promenade spans nearly three kilometers, with a 20-foot-high wall separating it from the sea. The existing streetlights along Marine Drive are inadequate, so the BMC often sets up temporary lighting during major events to ensure public safety.

To permanently address this issue, the civic authorities has now decided to improve the illumination along Marine Drive by installing LED fixtures under the 55 trees next to the promenade, said a civic sources. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 17 lakh and these lights, ranges from 30 to 40 watts, will enhance visibility and contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the area, said a civic official.

As part of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, the BMC is developing a similar 7.5-kilometer-long promenade between Breach Candy and Worli. This new space, spread across 70 hectares of open land, will feature tree-lined pathways, a dedicated cycle track, and space for citizens to walk and relax. The project is in its final stage of completion and is expected to be open to the public by May 2025.
