‘It Was A Runaway Marriage’: Aamir Khan Reveals He Had Eloped With First Wife Reena Dutta To Marry Her When He Was 21

Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, made a shocking revelation at an event in Delhi on Friday when he said that he had eloped with his first wife Reena Dutta back in 1986 to marry her. “Humne bhaag ke shaadi ki thi,” he revealed, leaving his fans surprised.

At the India Today Conclave, Aamir shared, “…Reena — she and I were married and we were together for 16 years. It was a runaway marriage, humne bhaag ke shaadi ki thi.” Reflecting on his two marriages, the actor added, “The most important relationships that I had in my life were with these wonderful people. Both Reena and Kiran (Rao – second wife) are amazing people. These two women are the ones I have spent my life with, and they have given me a lot.”

Aamir shared that despite parting ways with both his former wives, they have immense respect for each other. “Maybe we have moved on in our relationship, but I have the highest regard for both Kiran and Reena and their families. In fact, I am close to mummy and daddy. Reena’s daddy died recently. I’m very close to their families,” he explained.

For those unversed, Aamir and Reena knew each other since their teens as they were neighbours, and they fell in love while looking at each other from their windows. They secretly got married in 1986, two years before Aamir’s debut film as a lead, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, and until then, they had kept their marriage hidden from public.

However, Aamir and Reena got divorced in 2002 after being married for 16 years. They have two children — Ira and Junaid.
