Mumbai: Thane Session Court sentenced two men to life imprisonment on Friday for the gangrape, kidnap and robbery of a 30-year-old woman in Thane in 2017. The incident occurred on December 20, 2017, when the victim was returning home from work at Inorbit Mall in Malad. She took an auto-rickshaw and got off at Kashimira. From there, she boarded a tourist vehicle headed for Thane, which was diverted to a deserted location.

The two accused kidnapped, robbed, and raped the 30-year-old woman before fleeing. The case was registered at the Kashimira police station under several relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Authorities examined the CCTV footage and retraced the survivor’s route, identified the key witnesses.
The court sentenced them to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 55,000. Additional public prosecutors Varsha Chandane and Rajendra P Patil told the court “that on the evening of December 19, 2017, the victim, who was employed as a store manager, was returning home from work when she took Gosavi’s cab, and the other accused man was already in the front seat” as per report by media agency PTI.
The accused drove a short distance and stopped, claiming the car had a flat tyre that needed fixing. The accused then robbed the woman, snatching her jewellery and mobile phone and raped her in car.
The accused took her to a lodge, where she shouted for help, and they left her there before running away. The judge, in her decision, mentioned that the prosecution had successfully proven all the charges against the accused, who were then convicted and sentenced.
