The Siddhivinayak Ganpati Mandir Trust will offer 225 items of gold jewelry in an auction today when Maharashtra celebrates Gudi Padwa, the Marathi New Year.
The jewelry was offered to the deity by devotees. Apart from the gold jewelry, including necklaces, earrings, replicas of modaks, idols, and lockets, silver items will be auctioned. The temple is also selling coins with images of Siddhivinayak in weights ranging from 11 grams to 51 grams, made with 999 carat silver by the Central Mint.

Gudi Padwa is considered one of the most auspicious days of the year and people chose the day to buy precious metals, vehicles, and homes. The auction will be held between 11 am and 5 pm under the guidance of MLA Sadanand Sarvankar, the president of the temple trust.
Dr Sanjay Rathod, deputy chief executive officer of the temple trust, said that devotees buy the offerings as prasad. “Gudi Padwa is an auspicious day to buy gold and silver. Another benefit at the auction is that people do not have to pay making charges for the jewelry,” said Rathod, adding that auctions are held several times a year.
The items to be auctioned will be kept at the temple premises for display from 9 am on Sunday. The Marathi new year begins on Gudi Padwa, which falls on the first day of the Chaitra month. On this day, people install a Gudi, a bamboo stick adorned with items like cloth, copper vessels, neem and mango leaves, and battasha, a candy. Other traditions during the festival is the consumption of bitter and sweet items as food.
