Jal Ganga Abhiyan: MP’S Sehore Gears Up To Revive 1600+ Old Wells, Stepwells To Fight Depleting Groundwater Levels Amid Rising Heat

Sehore (Madhya Pradesh): Sehore district administration is conducting Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan with full enthusiasm. This statewide mission has been started with the intention to conserve water and increase the level of depleting underground water.

Under the campaign, repair and renovation works of natural water sources, wells, stepwells, check dams, stop dams, ponds are being done. As many as 1665 water structures have been identified across the district, for repair & renovation works.

Rural Development Department is doing this work with public cooperation and departmental funds. Other government departments have also been given targets for the upliftment of water sources. The campaign will be run from March 30 to June 30.

Water crisis looms large in Sehore

It is worth noting that Sehore is facing a water crisis. The situation is dire in rural areas as the groundwater level continues to fall season-by season.

Under the campaign, the administration is organising rallies, street plays in rural areas and even painting walls to create public awareness to conserve water.

Old wells, stepwells to be revived

District MNREGA Officer Pramod Tripathi said that under the Jal Ganga Abhiyan in the district, efforts are being made to revive old water sources, especially old wells and historical stepwells, along with their renovation in rural areas.

District Panchayat Sehore has set a target of renovating 1200 old water structures in the district, including 450 farm ponds, 15 Amrit Sarobars. Forest Department, Water Resources, Rural Engineering, Public Health Welfare Departments have also been given targets to revive water structures.

Collector appealed locals to participate

Collector Balaguru K. appealed the people of the district to participate in the mission and help save water conservation.

Repair and renovation work of old ponds, check dams, stop dams is also being done in the district, he added, encouraging more and more people to participate in the work.

The collector has directed the field staff that along with cleaning, deepening of water structures should also be done so that maximum rainwater can be stored.
