As of now Anurag has not publicly responded to the complaint. The Mumbai Police are yet to release an official statement on the matter or confirm whether an FIR has been registered.
Anurag, known for his bold and provocative storytelling in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, and Dev.D, is no stranger to controversy. However, this latest accusation has stirred backlash on social media, with demands for legal action gaining momentum.
What is the controversy?
Anurag strongly criticised the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for delaying the release of Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa’s Phule, a biographical drama directed by Ananth Mahadevan.
The film stars Pratik as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule. It faced backlash from sections of the Brahmin community in Maharashtra over alleged misrepresentation.
Anurag not only questioned the CBFC’s decision but also called out the perceived hypocrisy of the protestors. He further raised concerns about how an unreleased film had become accessible to certain groups, prompting such reactions.
The director’s “Brahmin pe mootonga” remark was a reply to one of teh Instagram users who had commented under his post.
