Mumbai: The University of Mumbai on Friday hosted an insightful special lecture by renowned economist and Padma Shri awardee Dr Nirupam Bajpai, who is currently associated with Columbia University. The event drew a significant audience, including academicians, students, and dignitaries from various fields.
Dr Bajpai, who has served as an advisor to three Indian Prime Ministers —late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, late Dr Manmohan Singh, and the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi — shared his thoughts on India’s developmental trajectory and the vision of a developed India by 2047.
“India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 requires inclusive and sustainable growth, backed by strategic policymaking and ground-level execution,” Dr Bajpai stated during his address. Drawing on decades of policy involvement and research, he elaborated on key initiatives that have shaped the nation’s development agenda.
Encouraging active participation from the youth, Dr Bajpai said, “The young generation must contribute positively and proactively towards nation-building. Optimism, innovation, and integrity are essential virtues for this transformative journey.”
The lecture was jointly organised by the University of Mumbai and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The event was graced by Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Principal Dr Ajay Bhamre, and ICSSR Director Prof. Kavita Laghate.
Reflecting on the event, Prof. Laghate said, “Dr Bajpai’s address offered valuable insights into policy and development. It was both intellectually enriching and motivational, especially for our students.”
The University highlighted that such interactions are part of its ongoing efforts to expose students to global thought leaders and inspire them to engage with national and international policy challenges.
