Mumbai: After a decade-long wait and multiple delays, the much-anticipated Carnac Bunder Road Over Bridge (ROB) a 154-year-old structure connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Masjid Bunder is finally nearing completion.
Closed to heavy vehicles since 2014 due to structural concerns, the bridge’s reconstruction faced hurdles from the ongoing Hancock Bridge work and local encroachment issues. However, the bridge will be now open to traffic from June 10.
The BMC has completed the installation of eight piers on the eastern side of the bridge. Work on the pedestal, the bridge’s foundational structure, is currently underway. Out of the 40 steel girders required for the bridge, five have already reached the construction site.
The remaining girders are expected to be delivered by April 27. Girder erection is set to be completed by May 2. Concreting in the railway section will be finished by May 7. Approach roads on both sides of the bridge are to be completed by June 5
With these key components aligned, the main carriageway is targeted for completion by June 10, 2025, paving the way for the bridge to open to vehicular traffic soon after.

Abhijeet Bangar, Additional municipal commissioner (projects) said, “The steel girders required for the bridge project are being sourced from a fabrication facility located in Daman. I have instructed officials to follow up with the supplier for the timely arrival of the girders. Senior engineers from the bridge department have been instructed to conduct regular site inspections.”
The bridge was initially shut down in 2014 for larger vehicles, and it was finally demolished in November 2022. However, its reconstruction has faced delays due to ongoing work on the Hancock Bridge and encroachments. The estimated cost of the bridge is approximately Rs. 49 crores. The new bridge will be 70 meters long and 26.5 meters wide.
