Overheard In Bhopal: Parche Pe Charcha, Unusual Farewell, Back In The Saddle & More

Parche pe Charcha

A leaflet, containing the misdeeds of an IPS officer who is holding an important position, is moving from one place to another. The pamphlet consists of information about how the officer is making money through underhand deals and about a few others who have been assigned the task to gather carrots on behalf of the Sahib. The pamphlet also touches on irregularities in the department. The information available in it indicates that only those who are working in the department can lay their hands on such facts. The pamphlet has been given the shape of a complaint. There are reports that the police headquarters has sent it to the Sahib’s department for an inquiry.  Although such leaflets are never probed, the issue has generated a lot of heat in the corridors of power where everyone knows how the Sahib got posting. Against this backdrop, many officials in the department have become active to remove him. Two IPS officers have shown keen interest in the matter.

Unusual Farewell

Officers are given farewell only when they retire. There is no tradition to give farewell to an officer when he is shifted to another department. Thus, when an IPS officer throws such a farewell party, it is bound to draw the attention of others.  A few days ago, an IPS officer gave farewell to a Principal Secretary (PS) after three months of his transfer from the department that the IPS officer is working for. The IPS officer hosted a dinner in honour of the PS. In the message, sent to the invitees to the dinner, it was written that the PS would be given farewell for his work in the department. The PS has been transferred to an important place.  After the dinner party, people in the corridors of power natter that the dinner was hosted to please the PS so that he does not object to the files sent by his previous department. Nevertheless, it is not easy to please the PS in whose honour the dinner was hosted.

Back in the saddle

IAS officer couple used to be the most powerful in the state just a year ago. The situation changed, and both were rendered powerless. The Sahib did not get any work for a long time, and madam was sent to the loop line. But the situation changes again. The Sahib has been recently sent to an important department, and madam, too, has been handed over the command of a key department where a senior officer was retired. Now, she is controlling the department. The bureaucrats talk about the return of the couple’s halcyon days in just one year. Nevertheless, politicians have barely had any role in their posting. A few officers have of course played an important role in it. Nevertheless, a powerful functionary of the RSS likes the Sahib, which seems to have benefited him.

Endless wait

A secretary-rank officer longs to see his name on transfer lists issued from time to time.  A few months ago, a powerful man assured the Sahib of posting him in an important department. He has been waiting for a plum posting since the day he got the assurance. His purpose is to make money through offstage deals. Because the officer has been in the loop line for a long time, he wants to return to the mainstream administration. So, he is making all efforts to please those who are at the power centre. The main problem with the Sahib is that any powerful person, trying to help him get a plum posting, becomes toothless in a few days. So, his hopes are shattered. The Sahib is not on good terms with the Principal Secretary (PS) of the department where he is posted. Whatever sweetener the department generates goes either to the minister or to the PS. This is the reason why the Sahib wants to go to another place.

Transfer in the offing

A secretary-rank IAS officer posted in an important department just a few months ago may be transferred again. He has been posted in the department during the tenure of a female officer who is now retired. A powerful person played an important role in his posting. This person is still trying to mediate in the big projects of the department, and the IAS officer seems to be working under his pressure. Because the higher-ups in the government got a whiff of what was happening, they might shift the Sahib from the department. The officer was considered junior since the day he was posted in such an important department, but he was sent there. After his posting, many projects were delayed. The Sahib is also one of those officers who cannot stay at one place for a long time. So, the chances of his being shifted from the department look bright – though the officer has begun to make efforts to remain there.

Keeping an eye

Two officers have set their eyes on the department of a Principal Secretary (PS) who may be transferred in the coming days. The PS may be deprived of the department that is handling some important work. In the government also, there are talks about the PS’s transfer. So, a senior IAS officer has set his eyes on it. This IAS officer has been trying to get into an important department for a long time and wants to join this place. Another officer is pulling out all the stops to get posting in an important place, and getting command of this department is on his Wishlist. Although the government is angry with him, he is sparing no effort to please the higher-ups to get an important wing. This department is included in his list.
